United States National Honor Society History
In 1919 at the annual convention of the National Association of Secondary Schools Principals, J. G. Masters, principal of Central High School in Omaha, Nebraska, proposed a national honor society of secondary schools. He and other principals were concerned about the growing movement to emphasize athletic and strictl academic activities, often to the detriment of programs designed to stimulate leadership and character.
Edward Rynearson, often considered the founder of the National Honor Society, spoke in favor of Masters’ proposal, saying, “Will not one common badge for the entire country be more valuable than may different local badges? . . . if the fundamental principle of the honor society is sound, it should be national in its application.”
The Committee on Constitution and Organization, appointed in 1920, presented its findings at the 1921 NASSP convention in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Faced with the necessity of providing an organization broad enough to meet all the varying needs of existing societies, the committee recommended character, leadership, scholarship, and service as the fundamental virtues most worthy of encouragement. By adopting the recommendation of the committee, delegates affirmed that the National Honor Society would be regarded as a concrete way to promote high school academic standards, a means of ensuring the continuation of democracy, and an instrument for the betterment of the individual and the school.
A testament to their vision is the fact that today more than 12,500 chapters have been chartered at high schools nationwide.
